What Are Lash Extensions?

Three common types of lash extensions are silk, synthetic, and mink that also comes in different shapes and sizes. The application process is usually done in a beauty salon by a trained professional using tweezers and specially made and semi-permanent glue. The overall procedure will take about 2 to 3 hours and your eyes are closed during the whole time. Having them on can last about three to four weeks and they fall off along with the growth cycle of your natural lashes.

Is It Safe? What Are The Risks Involved?

Generally, the procedure is deemed safe but many are concerned about the glue being used. According to experts, your eyes can be kept safe as long as the lashes are applied by an experienced aesthetician in a clean and hygienic setting, using chemicals that are safe for the skin.   Just like any other beauty treatments and procedures, having eyelash extensions also comes with risks namely: infection or trauma of the cornea or eyelid, which is an allergic reaction to the glue being used; and temporary or permanent loss of your natural lashes.   Infection happens when hygiene in the beauty salon is inadequate or when the eye has been damaged during the application.   Although the glue is generally safe for most since it is specially formulated for eyelash extension application, some ingredients can cause allergies which could trigger a reaction such as itching, pain, swelling, and redness.   Rubbing, pulling or tugging will cause a fracture to your natural lashes and may even damage the eyelash follicle permanently. In rare cases, lash extension can get stuck under your eye tissue, which may need surgery.   You don’t need to worry about the aforementioned details, as long as you choose the right eyelash extension salons with experienced aesthetician, you’re in good hands.

Tips That You Need To Remember

Take a little time to research the area to find the right salon that meets your expectations. Look at the background of the aesthetician, the ingredients that will be used and also check the following details:

  1. Do they have a good eyelash extension reputation and positive comments from previous customers?

  2. Check the area and observe if they practice good hygiene.

  3. How long are they providing this kind of service?

  4. Check photos and reviews from other clients.

  5. Does the aesthetician have certification and training to perform the eyelash extension procedure?

  6. Read the glue’s ingredients and double-check for any allergens. Check the expiration date as well.

  7. Ask for a patch test whereby a few eyelash extensions will be applied to your own lashes for both eyes and leave for 48 hours to test for any allergy reactions.

Another tip: If you just found out that you’re having an allergic reaction to the lash extension after the procedure has been done, refrain from removing them yourself to avoid further damage. Go and seek advice from the lash salon.
